In 1938 Bishop Edward Mooney (later to be made Cardinal of the Archdiocese of Detroit) invited the women of the Diocese of Detroit to affiliate with the National Council of Catholic Women as a Federation of existing organizations in the leadership role of Catholic Action.  The first all-day meeting was held in the Book Cadillac Hotel on Saturday, March 18, 1939.  Each decade of Council’s existence has been marked with significant accomplishments.

Mission Statement Council of Catholic Women/AD

Our Mission as members of the Council of Catholic Women, Archdiocese of Detroit, is to bring women together to share their faith; to grow spiritually and to unite in performing works of charity both in our community and abroad.

History of the CCW/AD Logo

In 1973, the CCW/AD Board of Directors decided that they should have a new official Logo. Sister Mary Ignatius Denay, an exceptionally outstanding person, art instructor at Mercy High, Farmington, was contacted.
She supplied the design which means:
a)     The letters CCW-AD   Council of Catholic Women Archdiocese of Detroit
b)     The cross is symbolic of sacrifice.
c)     The double circle is all inclusive of the never-ending circle of needs to be met by the circle of

        volunteers.
